The recent verdict on the 54 Magdalo mutineers has not come as a surprise. If history proves anything, it is the truism that the victor always dictates the outcome of events. If the Magdalo mutineers had been the victors, it’s probably GMA and her minions who would be facing the guilty verdict (perhaps even the firing squad). I would also not be surprised if the mutineers would later be pardoned. Again, as in the case of Erap, Ms. Arroyo will be heralded as the peacemaker and the leader of the nation. The guilty verdict was a political move. It is like a double-bladed sword that works both ways. This is a win-win situation — well, at least for the president.

I’ve heard that the verdict is the first of its kind in Philippine history. I’m not certain, though, if that is really the case. But in any case, I do believe that Gloria pardoning the convicted Magdalo soldiers would not come as a surprise, too. All before the altar of her survival, she’s willing to erase the lines between those stand against her and those with her.
